AirPlay Mirroring (Mac to Apple TV)

The new AirPlay mirroring feature for iPad 2 in iOS 5 is really good, but what if I want to use my Apple TV as a lightweight external monitor for my Mac? I already googled around and cannot find anything on the topic, so I decided that I would ask here to see if anyone had any suggestions on how I would do this. Before anyone mentions something about jailbreaking Apple TV and using VNC, I'm not interested. I would like a solution that I can use on any Apple TV.

AirPlay's work was mostly done for me if I use rothacr 's AirplayKit. I am worried about how I might reflect what was on my Mac display.

An ideal solution would be some kind of kext that actually recognizes the Apple TV as an external display in System Preferences, so that I can use my Apple TV to mirror my display, or, if I choose, use my Apple TV as a second monitor.

I understand that this may not be possible, so I can install an application that reflects my display, but I'm not sure the best way is to grab my desktop in a way that is compatible with Apple TV, and it is the least stressful for the processor and network resources . Sound transmission from my Mac would also be awesome. I...

  • to capture each frame as a still image and transfer each of them to AppleTV?
  • to capture each frame and encode it and transmit it as a kind of video stream?
  • Am I going about this in a completely wrong direction?

Can someone give me some idea and make me point in the right direction? Thank you for your help.

Erica Sadun has created a number of utilities for connecting macs to Apple tv 2.

The one you want is probably Bruce or AirFlick, although none of them are mirror images or use ATV as a second display.
