Will classic ASP pages work on versions of Windows that have gone through Windows 7?

We have an outdated system that uses both classic ASP and VB6 / COM +, and plans to migrate to the .NET stack.

We are trying to develop a migration schedule, and one key point will be "when will our old things stop working?"

For VB6 / COM +, Microsoft said that it does not plan to include the VB6 runtime in the Windows version after Windows 7 (yes, I know this is open to interpretation).

I have yet to find a similar statement for classic ASP. I have seen people refer to Microsoft's end-of-life schedule for Windows 2008 Server R2 (which was sometime in 2018) and infer that:

(a) since classic ASP runs on Win2008R2 and
(b) Win2008R2 is good until 2018, after which (c) classic ASP is good until 2018.

I'm not sure that I buy this, especially because we have contractual obligations to support new versions of Windows xx months after their release, so staying on Win2008R2 as a solution is not an option.

Can someone tell me something from Microsoft regarding the end of life for classic ASP?

He will stay with us for a few more years, according to this blog post :

Here are some interesting news from ScottGu and the team. I was wondering what is the life cycle for ASP "Classic". I looked at the Microsoft Lifecycle page and did not see it. I was fortunate enough to speak with ScottGu as well as Rich Ersek and said:

Classic ASP is actually very lively. It will be sent again with Windows Vista and Windows Longhorn Server - so it will be supported for at least 10 years from the date of this ship . - ScottGu

and

Asp.DLL is part of VISTA, so the runtime will be supported based on the Vista support life cycle.

All classic ASP development tools (i.e. Visual Interdev) are now in the extended support period, and we will not update the tools for classic ASP.

To get the best toolkit / platform option, ASP.NET is the way to go. - Rich Ersek

The final release date for Windows Vista is January 30, 2007, so this means that classic ASP will be supported in new versions at least until 2017, and possibly much further.

Scott Guthrie is Microsoft Corporate VP of Server and Tools , so he knows what he's talking about.

Edit : finally (January 30 th 2012) - official confirmation that the classic ASP will stay with us for years to come, including Windows 8:

The next major version of Internet Information Services (IIS) will be shipped as part of the Windows 8 operating system. ASP pages will be supported on Windows 8 for at least 10 years from the release date of Windows 8 .
