Chrome extension: hide and show browser action icon

Can I show and hide the browser action icon on the settings page?

I know how to do this with page actions using the show and hide methods, but I don't see any similarities in browser actions.

From https://developer.chrome.com/extensions/browserAction :

If you want to create an icon that does not always appear, use the site action instead of the browser action.

In other words: no, this is impossible. The actions of the browser are constant in design.

Google defines the browser action as static buttons, and the page action as dynamic buttons. Google is very careful with the Chrome interface and does not want people to use buttons in different ways, which they “should” do.

They do this because they believe that users have made an effort to learn how to use Chrome, and Google wants to introduce a consistent, consistent and minimalistic user interface.

You don’t have much freedom with the Chrome user interface.
