Is the CORS Access-Control-Allow-Headers wildcard ignored?

I'm having problems getting a cross-domain CORS request to work correctly using Chrome.

Request Headers:

Accept:*/* Accept-Charset:ISO-8859-1,utf-8;q=0.7,*;q=0.3 Accept-Encoding:gzip,deflate,sdch Accept-Language:en-US,en;q=0.8 Access-Control-Request-Headers:origin, content-type Access-Control-Request-Method:POST Connection:keep-alive User-Agent:Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_8_2) AppleWebKit/537.4 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/22.0.1229.94 Safari/537.4

Answer headers:

 Access-Control-Allow-Headers:* Access-Control-Allow-Origin:* Allow:GET, POST, OPTIONS Content-Length:0 Date:Tue, 30 Oct 2012 20:04:28 GMT Server:BaseHTTP/0.3 Python/2.7.3

Mistake:

 XMLHttpRequest cannot load domain. Request header field Content-Type is not allowed by Access-Control-Allow-Headers.

And the Python code serving the request for options:

 self.send_response(200) self.send_header('Allow', 'GET, POST, OPTIONS') self.send_header('Access-Control-Allow-Origin', '*') self.send_header('Access-Control-Allow-Headers', '*') self.send_header('Content-Length', '0') self.end_headers()

Does the Access-Control-Allow-Origin wildcard seem to be ignored?

Support for wildcards in the Access-Control-Allow-Headers header was added to the standard of living only in May 2016, so it may not be supported by all browsers. In a browser that does not yet implement this, it must be accurate: https://www.w3.org/TR/2014/REC-cors-20140116/#access-control-allow-headers-response-header

If you expect a large number of headers, you can read the value of the Access-Control-Request-Headers header and return that value back to the Access-Control-Allow-Headers header.

These CORS headers do not support * as a value, the only way is to replace * with this:

FAQ:

  • Why are Access-Control-Allow-Headers , Access-Control-Expose-Headers , Access-Control-Allow-Methods values too long?

    They do not support syntax * , so I collected the most common (and exotic) headers from around the Internet in various formats # 1 # 2 # 3 (and from time to time I will update the list)

  • Why are you using Header unset ______ syntax?

    There is a strange error on the GoDaddy servers (on which my website is hosted ..) where, if the headers are already set, the previous value will be added to the existing one .. (instead of replacing it), so I β€œclear” the existing values ( really just a quick and dirty solution)

  • Is it safe for me to use "as is"?

    Well, basically the answer is YES, because .htaccess restricts the headers to scripts (PHP, HTML, ...) and resources (.JPG, .JS, .CSS) served from the following "folder" [CN00]. If desired, you can delete the Access-Control-Allow-Methods lines. In addition to Connection , Time-Zone , Keep-Alive and DNT , Accept-Ranges , Vary , X-UA-Compatible , X-Frame-Options , X-Content-Type-Options and X-Xss-Protection only sentence I use for of my online service .. feel free to delete them too ...

I found that Access-Control-Allow-Headers: * should be set ONLY for an OPTIONS request. If you return it for a POST request, the browser will cancel the request (at least for Chrome)

The following PHP code works for me

 // Allow CORS if (isset($_SERVER['HTTP_ORIGIN'])) { header("Access-Control-Allow-Origin: {$_SERVER['HTTP_ORIGIN']}"); header('Access-Control-Allow-Credentials: true'); header("Access-Control-Allow-Methods: GET, POST, OPTIONS"); } // Access-Control headers are received during OPTIONS requests if ($_SERVER['REQUEST_METHOD'] == 'OPTIONS') { header("Access-Control-Allow-Headers: *"); }

I found similar questions with some misleading answer:

  • The server thread says this is a 2 year chrome error: Access-Control-Allow-Headers does not match localhost. This is wrong: I can use CORS for my local server with Post normally
  • Access-Control-Allow-Headers accepts wildcards. This is also wrong, the wildcard works for me (I tested only with Chrome)

It will take me half a day to find out the problem.

Good coding

Quoted from monsur,

The Access-Control-Allow-Headers header does not allow wildcards. This should be an exact match: http://www.w3.org/TR/cors/#access-control-allow-headers-response-header .

So here is my php solution.

 if ($_SERVER['REQUEST_METHOD'] == 'OPTIONS') { $headers=getallheaders(); @$ACRH=$headers["Access-Control-Request-Headers"]; header("Access-Control-Allow-Headers: $ACRH"); }

here is a spell for nginx, inside

 location / { # Simple requests if ($request_method ~* "(GET|POST)") { add_header "Access-Control-Allow-Origin" *; } # Preflighted requests if ($request_method = OPTIONS ) { add_header "Access-Control-Allow-Origin" *; add_header "Access-Control-Allow-Methods" "GET, POST, OPTIONS, HEAD"; add_header "Access-Control-Allow-Headers" "Authorization, Origin, X-Requested-With, Content-Type, Accept"; } }
