Can someone explain eclipse.p2.profile

I will build the Eclipse RCP assembly.

Using p2-director , one property is profile . The Eclipse documentation contains only the explanation below, which, in my opinion, is not entirely clear.

-profile: profile identifier containing the description of the target product. This identifier is determined by the eclipse.p2.profile property contained in config.ini of the target product. For the Eclipse SDK, the identifier is "SDKProfile"

So my question is this:

What is the profile used for, what does it describe, and how can I ensure its proper use?

Does anyone have a better explanation or link to the proper documentation?

I am not an expert, but I will try. It basically contains all the p2 materials necessary for the software update mechanism to work for your application. You will need this using the RCP application. It contains (among other things) a list of artifacts that are currently installed. It allows you to return to the previous state of the installation.

You can find examples of this in any Eclipse installation in p2//org.eclipse.equinox.p2.engine/profileRegistry
