Google DFP email ads behave strangely

I am trying to display DFP ads via email. I follow the recommendations here .

  • I have an ad unit configured for email only.
  • I have targeting this ad unit with image ad only
  • Line item has no targeting restrictions or the like

The ad will appear in the email at least for the first time. The strange thing I see is that after the first click, clicking on an ad again often leads me to a blank page, rather than to a click-through page. Also, when I open the message again, sometimes the image does not load. The code in the letter is as follows:

<a href="https://pubads.g.doubleclick.net/gampad/jump?iu=/{my_pub_id}/300x250_email&amp;sz=300x250&amp;c={cachebuster}&amp;tile=1"> <img src="https://pubads.g.doubleclick.net/gampad/ad?iu=/{my_pub_id}/300x250_email&amp;sz=300x250&amp;c={cachebuster}&amp;tile=1" /> </a>

We solved this by disabling cookies in the standard tag using the co = parameter; adding co = 1 to the tag.

 <a href="https://pubads.g.doubleclick.net/gampad/jump?co=1&iu=/{my_pub_id}/300x250_email&amp;sz=300x250&amp;c={cachebuster}&amp;tile=1"> <img src="https://pubads.g.doubleclick.net/gampad/ad?co=1&iu=/{my_pub_id}/300x250_email&amp;sz=300x250&amp;c={cachebuster}&amp;tile=1" /> </a>

The only problem (for us) that this creates is that we cannot serve third-party tags, even those that are directly resolved by .gifs, using a standard tag.

Had the same problem and I solved it using a script to redirect clicks through a script on my web server where the ad is displayed again so that all cookies can be set.

The link is as follows: http://www.mysite.com/dfpclick.php?adunit=mailing&cbuster=1369608725

 Script dfpclick.php: <?php /* Google DFP url redirect*/ if ($_REQUEST['adunit']) { $sUrl = 'http://pubads.g.doubleclick.net/gampad/jump?iu=/%mygoogleid%/'.$_REQUEST['adunit'].'&sz=1x1&c='.$_REQUEST['cbuster']; } ?> <html> <head> <meta HTTP-EQUIV="REFRESH" content="0; url=<?=$sUrl?>"> </head> <body> <?php if ($_REQUEST['adunit']) { echo '<img src="http://pubads.g.doubleclick.net/gampad/ad?iu=/%mygoogleid%/'.$_REQUEST['adunit'].'&sz=1x1&c='.$_REQUEST['cbuster'].'" width="0" height="0" border="0" style="width:0px; height:0px;" alt=""/>'; } ?> </body> </html>

It turns out that DFP for small businesses requires cookie support, even when using a JavaScript method that doesn't use JavaScript. Thus, it works great in web clients like Gmail, but it doesn't work in Outlook, etc. DFP Premium can supposedly show ads by email without the need for cookies.

Using the co = option does not work for DFP Small Business. My workaround:

Use the same code for img <img src="https://pubads.g.doubleclick.net/gampad/ad?iu=/{my_pub_id}/300x250_email&sz=300x250&c={cachebuster}" />

And create a redirect link on your <a href="http://yourwebsite.com/adunit/300x250_email"> website. This page reads and filters the response from http://pubads.g.doubleclick.net/gampad/adx?iu=/{my_pub_id}/300x250_email&sz=300x250&c={cachebuster} to get a click tracking link using javascript link=$(xmlDoc).find('a').attr('href'); and redirect.

This workaround doesn't work for rotation (more than one ad / line item is being used for the same ad unit at the same time).

I would like to know how to serve ads via email with DFP SB
