Development LDAP Server in Windows 8

I need to check LDAP connection from my application. I need something that I can easily install (preferably xcopy).

A few years ago, I used Active Directory Application (ADAM) mode for these purposes. But it is not supported on Windows 8. Gives me a funny error message:

You do not have permission to update Windows. Please contact your system administrator.

Now it looks like Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS) . But then again:

Installer encountered an error: 0x80096002 The certificate for the signer of the message is invalid or not found.

So, two questions:

  • Is it possible to use AD LDS in Windows 8.
  • Any other options? A quick search, for example, gives OpenLDAP .

I ended up with OpenLDAP for Windows because it does not require any dependencies.

I also added it to Chocolatey

 cinst openldap

If you have Windows 8 Pro, AD LDS is included in it. Go to the Enable or Disable Windows Features section, select the Active Directory Lightweight directory services .

You can also use powershell

 Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName DirectoryServices-ADAM-Client

You can try ApacheDS . It was updated on May 2, 2013, so we hope they tested it on Windows 8.
