I find it difficult to understand the overall picture of GemStone for Smalltalk. I know about GLASS as an application server using Linux, Seaside, and Apache. But I want to know if this is a usable environment for applications other than Seaside.
I also had problems finding the main questions:
It is not clear to me whether GLASS or GemStone / S depends on the virtual machine used. For example, if I use a VM that supports black streams, does this mean that GemStone / S will work transparently?
For what I saw, this is not useful for 3D applications. For example, if my application developed in Pharo or VisualWorks uses OpenGL, can I consider GemStone / S for extension?
I read that you might have objects in VisualWorks and objects in GemStone / S, but that bothers me. How do I know if the object I just created was already saved or on the client side? In this case, do I need a GemBuilder?
