How can I detect a Not Found URL error in php curl?

How can I detect this error using php curl? curl return even if the url does not exist.

Not Found The requested URL /foo/index.php/items/edit was not found on this server.

use this to get the HTTP status code:

 $code = curl_getinfo($ch, CURLINFO_HTTP_CODE); 

If 404, this means that the request URL was not found.

Note: do not forget to leave this line until curl_close($ch);
