SQL Server 2012 32-bit or 64-bit on a 64-bit machine?

I'm going to install SQL Server 2012 Developer on my 64-bit development machine, but I'm not sure if I need to install 32-bit or 64-bit.

My confusion comes from the fact that my Visual Studio 2012 is 32-bit and my laptop is not quite fast (Intel Core2Duo P8400 @ 2.26Ghz with 5 GB of RAM).

Generally speaking, installing a 64-bit or 32-bit application on a 64-bit machine is the right choice?

The default solution for all SQL Server performance issues is more memory. This only works above 4 GB if you have 64-bit SQL Server on a 64-bit machine. You already have a 64-bit machine with more than 4 GB of memory, so installing a 64-bit version of SQL Server has no problems.

Please note that it does not matter if you do not need to maintain a very large database at the time you have to make a decision, because you do not know what the future will bring. I had such an experience, and I am really very glad that while I installed the 64-bit version, now I am working with a 50 + GB database. Something I did not expect at that time.

There are no general tips on which version to install. Visual Studio runs in a 32-bit process, but your project can focus on a 64-bit process, since it will be debugged as part of another process.

The main question: how much RAM do you think your database will need? There are no shortcomings in installing 64-bit software on 64-bit machines, but 32-bit software will be executed at the compatibility level (WoW64 - windows on Windows 64).

Using 32 or 64-bit software on old hardware is also irrelevant. While the processor supports it!

There is no such thing as Visual Studio 64bit, VS is only 32-bit, regardless of the operating system and the target of the project, this is due to the fact that the VS UI will perform different processes of external tasks

Regarding SQL, Microsoft's instructions strongly recommend installing 32-bit versions of SQL only when running on a 32-bit version of the OS.

So you have to install the 64 bit version

According to my understanding, a 32-bit OS will allow you to support RAM or use RAM up to 2powe32 kb. means that the server will allow you to work with memory up to 2power32 kbs .... similarly 64 bit. 2powerof.

you can install 32-bit 64-bit os..but you cannot install 64-bit SQL Server on a 32-bit OS
