How does StarDock ModernMix work?

Question

Today I found StarDock ModernMix, with it we can run modern Windows 8 applications on a classic desktop.

Do we know how this works?

I assume there is some control (ActiveX?) That can run the Metro application, but this is probably not publicly documented anywhere
