Jekyll converts each new line as a line break

Question

I use Jekyll with kramdown to create a static site, and today I noticed that whenever I continued the same sentence on a new line, Jekyll inserts the <br /> tag there. This has never happened before.

Since all my markup files do not cross the 80 char limit, formatting the last website looks like shit. Why is Jekyll doing this?

I tested this behavior on Jekyll 1.5 to 2.2.

For me, this setting causes Kramdown to replace newlines with BR.

 kramdown: input: GFM 

This permits:

 kramdown: input: GFM hard_wrap: false
