How to reserve screen space in OS X?

On OSX, the Dock, when visible, reserves space that other windows cannot use. How it's done?

In my use case

  • I want to limit the space in which all application windows can open,
  • Whenever a new popup appears, it should be limited to a limited space and focused on a limited space
  • Something like Desktop Coral for windows.

You can write an apple script that continuously monitors which application starts up and resizes it to the size you need at startup. A small example for this is given in the following script:

Hope this helps. If you have further questions, feel free to ask.
