SQL Server installation - what is the installation media folder?

I am installing SQL Server 2008. I have installed the .NET framework 3.5. Then I got the SQL Server 2008 folder and completed the following steps -

  • I clicked customization tools.
  • Then I clicked on SQL Server Installation Center.
  • I clicked the β€œInstall” link on the left side.
  • Then I clicked "New standalone SQL Server installation or added features to an existing installation"
  • Then I got the View SQL Server Installation Media window

Which folder to choose? Or is there any other way to install SQL Server?

If you downloaded SQL from a Microsoft website, rename the file to a zip file, and then you can extract the files inside the folder, and then select the one when you "View SQL Server installation media"

SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe> SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.zip

7zip will open it (standard Windows zip does not work)

Extract something like C: \ SQLInstallMedia

You will get folders like 1033_enu_lp, resources, x64 and a bunch of files.

If you are using an executable file,

  • just run the executable (for example: "en_sql_server_2012_express_edition_with_advanced_services_x64.exe")
  • Go to the Settings tab
  • Copy the "Root directory of the root directory" (should look something like the one shown below)
  • Paste it into the open SQL Server Installation Tools Overview window

Save yourself from renaming and unpacking, etc.

When installing SQL Server, it extracts the contents to the temp folder in the C directory. You can copy this folder after the extraction is complete, and then use it to view

Go to "Administration Tools \ Services" (or enter services.msc in the console if you use the SQL Server service (SQLEXPRESS). If you do, it will be installed.

From Visual Studio, open the server explorer (menu View \ Server Explorer or CTRL + W, L). Right-click Data Connections and select Create New SQL Server Database. After that create tables and stuff ...

If you want Management Studio to manage the server, you must download and install it from:

I came across this just now with SQL Server 2014 SP1. The installer gave me the same problem, and I followed the suggestions of other answers to this question, but it did not lead to anything.

In the end, I realized that I needed to download and install SQL Server 2014 first, and then apply SP1 to it. (Doh)

The problem is with the installation file name is too long. Change the name of the parent folder setup.exe (short name). And try it! ..
