Xcode Interface Builder Shows No Choice For All Files

Regardless of what I selected in Interface Builder, the inspector did not seem to register the selection and only showed "No choice."

I tried opening and closing files, restarting Xcode, and even restarting my Mac. Without changes! What the hell is going on?

Other projects work fine. This is just this project ...

It made me go crazy for a long time. I did not find anything here on Stackoverflow about this, and not by googling either, initially.

Fortunately, after playing out several different ways, I finally found a simple solution here .

Taken from this site:

Here's how you can fix it in two steps without even having to restart Xcode:

  • Select another file (which is not an interface type) on the current tab with the problem.
  • Open a new tab and select the Interface Builder file in which the problem occurs.

Shame on you, Apple!

In Xcode 8.3, the preferred solution does not seem to work. My solution, similar to travdu, was to click the "Show Version Editor" button (two arrows pointing left and right) and then go back to "Show Standard Editor". Doing this fixed it for me.

There is also a feature in Xcode 7.3.1. to switch between the "standard editor" and the "assistant editor" in the upper right corner, to "deal" with this error.

Click between two two icons

THE MOST SIMPLE DECISION:

(For each of those who have tried all of the above options, like me, try this once):

  1. Switch to LaunchScreen.storyboard from your Main.storyboard

  2. See if you can access all inspectors on the right side of LaunchScreen.storyboard .

If yes,

  1. Switch back to Main.storyboard

Always work for me! Hope this also helps someone. Thanks!

If the above solutions do not work, try adding an object (such as a shortcut) to the main storyboard. All inspectors brought for me with xcode 7.3

I just experienced the symptom "Utility area does not show anything" with Xcode version 9.0. Thanks for the tips! In my case, after I closed all the files displayed in the assistant editor, you would think that this is completely unrelated, but it worked again! (Before that, I tried to restart Xcode, restart iOS, none of them worked.)

I just ran into the same problem. And I see that there is a solution already, but it can help others: make sure that you are in Main.storyboard and not in LaunchScreen.storyboard

Hope it helps!

The mistake is strange. And all the answers did not help me. The following steps were helpful to me:

  • go to the project file.
  • Click the button next to "Image Launch Source",

After that, Xcode shows the assets accordingly.

For me, the error was caused by the lack of interface recovery. I think this happens when I open the project file when the asset editor was opened last time. If I close the tab containing the Assets editor, close Xcode and open the project again, fine.

Having tried first of all tricks, I just made a copy somewhere of the file in which there is a problem, and deleted this file from Xcode. I opened it right from there and the file seemed good. Dragging him into the project solved this disgusting problem.

Open the file in a new tab and it will work fine
