How to get icon in Google Inbox?

I receive emails from different senders, and when I view them in Google Inbox, either inbox.google.com, or in the Android app, some have an icon next to them ... others just have an email.

BitBucket, for example, has a nice icon when they send me an email: BitBucket Icon

Question:

Does the Google Inbox get this image with any G + magic or certain email headers here?

How to implement this in my own solutions when sending emails?

According to MarketingLand.com

Show your logo as "From: Address"

One of the great things about Googleโ€™s new Inbox is that itโ€™s more visual. The sender of the email is displayed by the icon, rather than the plain text From: address. This is similar to the Gmails Grid View and works:

  • Having a verified Google+ business account
  • Authentication with SPF and DKIM
  • Sign up for Google

ReturnPath has a detailed blog post on how they did it: https://blog.returnpath.com/creating-profile-image-gmail-subscribers/

Highlights from their publication below:

  • Since our response to the email address was configured as an alias for people via email ... we had to include this answer - the email address in the actual [Google] account.
  • Add logo as profile picture for Google account.
  • Make sure your DMARC record is built.
  • If in doubt, talk to your ESP.

I am part of the marketing department; we have not tried this yet, but it is on my email to-do list.
