What does asp.net mean?

I know asp means Active Server Pages, but I wonder if "active server" really means anything?

ASP.NET pages are not static; they have executable server code behind them, which can dynamically generate page content or interact with the serving system - these are active (web-server) pages.

As an aside, ASP.NET is not really an upgrade for ASP, it was simply named in such a way as to get it outside the corporate departments - you could sell it to your senior customers as an โ€œupgradeโ€ to ASP, although it was pretty much a separate technology.

ASP.NET is an enterprise scripting language. This means Active Server Pages. In the name itself, I say that I am active. ASP code will run on the server and dynamically provide data for use.
