3D graphics library for Java?

I am looking for a reliable 3D Java API for the 3D scene with good documentation, an active community and a license that allows them to be used for commercial purposes.

I excluded com.sun.scenegraph because it is GPL (and seemingly dead), Java3D because of this post and JMonkeyEngine because of this post. Any ideas?

Try Xith3D ; It uses JOGL, not Java3D.

My interpretation of the Java3D message is that they add a new scene graph without replacing their current one, in order to more effectively hide JavaFX, which is designed for web applications. I used Java3D in the past and I liked it, so I recommend trying to contact the developers and ask what are their plans for any application that you are building.

There is also jReality , which BSD licensed, uses JOGL, and looks pretty pretty.

It supports many output forms: software-only rendering, OpenGL rendering, virtual reality rendering (as in CAVE); file formats such as Pixars RenderMan® and SVG

Currently (mid-2012) I highly recommend jMonkeyEngine . It has a pretty good 3D graphical viewing ability , suitable for use in applications such as 3D games.

It is fully open source and has a very active community and a solid development map - which is very important if you want to use it in the long run!
