Major headache, grounds for divorce, plausible excuse for murder, etc.

But actually the answer is much more complicated. The quick answer is a deployment unit that usually includes content such as .aspx application pages, list schemes, settings expressed in CAML (potentially huge XML files without a lot of documentation).

JD's suggestion for Ted Pattisonโ€™s book is good, but I suggest putting together a few books because you usually find something in one that you donโ€™t find in the other, and this will help you see what is required by agreement and which is only a specific preference the author.

You really need to comb a lot of different sources and plan to spend considerable time on SharePoint before you become comfortable with these concepts.

Check out SharePoint templates and practices here and here.

I also highly recommend compiling a copy of Ted Pattison's book Inside SharePoint Windows Services 3.0

This should be necessary for reading noob SharePoint developers. Good luck on your SharePoint journey.

This webcast on how to add social networking features to Sharepoint can be helpful.

And there are a lot of videos here , some are free and some are not.

The minimum parameter you need is feature.xml and elements.xml if you want the function to really do something. I recommend templates from WSPBuilder as a starting point.
