AnkhSVN does not recognize my decision as being in source control

I did not go the way of using the ankhSVN context menu in VS to add my solution to SVN. I went the route (because I prefer and love how the tortoise does it), using Tortoise to add my folder / project to SVN for the first time.

Then, when I opened this solution, VS opens, but ankhSVN still does not put my files or does not recognize the connection to svn.

what deal? I don’t want to be forced to use ankhSVN for the first SVN project so that ankhSVN binds, recognizes and kicks.

Most likely, AnkhSVN is not loaded yet. Open Tools - Options - Source Control and select AnkhSVN as the active SCC provider. Then go to File - Subversion - Change Source Control and connect / bind the solution. This causes Ankh to load the next time you open the solution by annotating the sln file. Other people checking the same sln file also benefit from this because Ankh is then loaded directly.

The time that I had was due to the fact that SVN was updated, and ankhSVN did not support the type. I fixed this either by rolling back the SVN update, or by installing the latest version of ankhSVN, which is sometimes in beta.

I had the same problem, usually this fix:

Right-click on the solution node in Solution Explorer. In the context menu, go to Subversion ... Refresh Status.

Or, as Stefan points out, just use the Ankh toolbar in Visual Studio.
