The relationship between the GEF and GMF?

I am working on a summary of the eclipse modeling project and its various subprojects. He is not going to publish, his only goal is to help my colleagues and, above all, my boss get a general impression of this topic.

For a better understanding, I took the chart from the Eclipse GEF User Guide and changed it. I want to show the relationship between GEF (Graphical Edition) and GMF (Graphical Modeling Framework). Did I understand correctly?

I am afraid that you did not understand it correctly, at least it is difficult to understand the diagram.

I think it should look something like this:

GMF / \ EMF GEF \ Draw2D

The generated GMF-Source uses EMF to process model data, and GEF to display / edit.

Take a look at GMF Runtime View (Components)

In your chart, it’s not easy to understand the role of GMF. I have not been working with GMF for some time, but if I remember, GMF provides code generation and structure. This framework uses GEF and EMF and does most of the hard work associated with the model editor. This can probably be seen as a new layer over GEF and EMF. Perhaps you can change it to show this relationship.

You may also consider the workflow associated with developing the GMF editor.

You requested a workflow related to the development of the GMF editor. I hope the following information is helpful to you.

There are 6 models that need to be developed to create a graphic editor:

  • Domain model
  • Gen domain model
  • Tool Definition Model
  • Graphic Definition Model
  • Display Definition Model
  • Gen model editor diagram

generate chart code.

There are many options for developing your domain model (XML Schema, annotated java, ...). Eclipse GMF provides wizards for creating all of these models, and you can tweak the settings to get what you want.

After creating these models, you just need to run the project to get your editor!
