How do I implement one-way notification for a BlackBerry app?

I heard that for this I need to purchase a Blackberry Enterprise Server, which costs me 1,400 a year. It's true? Where is a good starting point when implementing push notifications?

I am familiar with the development of iPhone push, but cannot find the equivalent for a blackberry.

Earlier this year, Blackberry launched a push service that does not require Apple-like BES. There is a Java SDK for it. You can find more information here: http://na.blackberry.com/eng/developers/javaappdev/pushapi.jsp#tab_tab_overview
