What is the reason for using the page title as a link to yourself?
I noticed that many websites use
<h1><a href="/subdir/somepage/">bla bla</a></h1> at example.com/subdir/somepage/
Why are they doing this? SEO? Compliance with some standard I do not know? Does this really help users?
EDIT : after many answers clearly misunderstood me. I am not talking about a link to the websiteโs homepage. Am I talking about the question page in SO using the question text in the H2 element (see above)? For a link to the same page.
if I want to cut and paste a link to a page, this is one operation (in Firefox) to right-click the page title and select "Copy link location". Scrolling (or selecting all) by URL and then clicking on the -C control are two operations.
I do not think the link is particularly useful, except in two cases:
- If for some reason youโve cleared your location bar (or overwritten it with something else), you still have access to the page link,
- Similarly, if the location bar is not displayed, you can still easily get a link to the current page.
I am not sure that the reasons are very convincing.
Most likely, some smart php (or perl) scripts generate some standard header content for all pages on the site. This is why it may suddenly contain a link to itself.
It also helps maintain the integrity of the pager.
I find this feature really useful. This means that no matter where I am on the website, I can simply click on the website name to take me to the home page.
Since the URLs of other sites often have a deep link, I can read the article and then decide to take a look at the rest of the site - is it interesting, does it look legal, etc.
Please implement it on your sites!
Just take a look at some inexperienced users - they click on it when they get lost. And to be honest, I started using it myself as the fastest bookmark you don't even need to create.
In terms of design / usability, such a link is filled with a semantic meaning: "Look, it's me!"
Ofri, in your example, I believe that alemjerus and Tomasz Zielinski covered it for you. This is a link to the home page of the site, which is automatically created by the server. This is really common, and I often use it often for blogs in particular.
Think of your favorite blog or community website, which is updated frequently. You usually add bookmarks or browse the address of the home page and you are provided with the latest content. If you refresh the page, say, in an hour or a day, you can see various content.
Now suppose you come across one particularly inspired recording during your lunch break, and you send an email link to your friend, who always answers questions about stack overflows between noon and 1 pm. When your friend reads your email address, the content will change.
If there was only a way to send a link to a specific post that you want to share ....
