Is the Visual Studio template file just a regular .zip file or is it something else?

I am trying to customize a project template file exported by the Visual Studio Export Template wizard. At first glance, it looks like just a zip file for a garden, but it’s not:

  • I cannot edit files. If I try to change or delete or replace the file in the zip archive, I get The Compressed (zipped) Folder is invalid or corrupted.
  • If I decode and recompress the zip file, Visual Studio will no longer recognize it as a template.

Is this something specific to my installation, or is there something non-standard regarding the zip format used by Visual Studio templates?

I tried again, but actually # 2 above - this is wrong - I can unlock, edit and archive it again, and VS will see the template. Still at a standstill why I could not directly manipulate the source archive, but I continue.

Visual Studio templates use the standard ZIP format. I have successfully compressed and uncompressed these files many times in the past.

What zip tool do you use?

The solution is here: Exported project template from VS2008, but is it damaged? In short: do not loop the directory, go into the directory, select all the files and archive them.

In the past, I used Winzip to unzip a template, make changes, then rezip and VS read it and found out about the changes. These were VS2005 and VS2008
