Unable to combine commits using TortoiseGit

Question

I have two branches with several commits each. On one branch, I can go to the log, select two commits, and TortoiseGit shows "merge into one commit" in the context menu. On another branch, this parameter is not displayed in the context menu. Both commit sequences are very similar; add a file, then modify it, so there really is no difference between branches.

What factors can lead to the fact that this "combine with one commit" will not be available? I am wondering if I should just switch to the command line.

You need to have a branch checked to combine the commits with TortoiseGit.
