Using MailDir as a backend for Gnus

I use offlineimap to synchronize my gmail account with locak maildir, and then using gnus to read this directory everything is fine, but gnus uses its own flags to mark the reading of unread messages, and they do not synchronize with gmail. is there any way to force gnus to use standard maildir flags?

AFAIK, the situation has not improved regarding nnmaildir and gnus since this .

For this exact situation, I now use mutt, installing Emacs as my editor.

I use offlineimap and dovecot to download and service my mail locally. I also use GNUS. Getting dovecot to work did not allow me to use GNUS for quite some time, since GNU support for maildir is so disgusting. This is what I need to make dovecot work:

mail_location = maildir:~/Mail:LAYOUT=fs:INBOX=~/Mail/INBOX

One of the very nice parts of my solution is that I have real and working offline synchronization, so when the network is unavailable (about 80% of the time on campus), I can still check and sort mail.

This was fixed in nnmaildir on the Gnus trunk as of 2012-09-05. The fix appeared in the version of Gnus released by Emacs 24.3.

The solution is to use a local imap server (like dovecot) to view your maildir and use gnus to access that imap server.

This is all that the official guide should be about maildirs and GNUS - I personally could not find what you are looking for there, but on the other hand, I'm just a person, maybe you will notice that I did not. I heard that Wanderlust has the best maildir support for all Emacs email readers.
