What good icon represents a legend or key for a chart?

I implement a widget for a small web application that displays a legend / key for a chart (or chart / map / chart / independently), but only when you hover over the widget. Basically it will be a div with a background image. What will be a good badge that says “I'm showing a legend” or “I'm a legend” for unfamiliar users? I am looking for something in the range of 10x10 to 20x20 pixels.

Assuming the legend is the same as the key (is it?), Then I could use a small key icon (for example, you would open the door), but at worst it seems crappy or obscure. I am not sure if this is the best way to do this. Is there an icon that should immediately remind users of the legend?

In my region (southern USA), I would say that the key is better known than legend. So I would find a key icon for this. There are many icon sites that I often see http://www.iconfinder.net/

Maybe just a question mark icon - help / legend is like a map.

Something like a sign of tourist information is likely to be explicit enough to get information about the item ...

I agree with chris_l that the i icon will probably be what you want. I do this with my own answer, because I strongly disagree with my second sentence (use the + sign). The + icon is already understood to either add something or expand something, so I think the user will be confused. For legends in my own applications, I use a blue circle with italics, the lowercase "i" in white. It seems everyone is getting it.

At 10x10 or 20x20 pixels, I think you will need to instantly recognize something. Do not think about it, if the key is the obvious answer, use the key

I would use the icon (i) for "info". Or perhaps the [+] icon, which is often used to represent "more"
