SEO with image link alt text vs standard text link

I am currently developing a website, and the main navigation consists of links to images, because the font they use is not standard.

My client is only worried if this will be a mess of search engine optimization? Can I just add text to images of type "link 1" or use the name attribute of the anchor tag? Or would it be better to just use navigation as anchor tags with link names in them, for example: <a href="...">link 1</a> ?

I'm new to SEO, so I don’t know what to offer him,

Thank you for your time,

Text links are the authority for image-based links. Although search engines will use the alt and title tags to identify image content, your anchor text is still king. Remember that a search robot can upload an image file, but it cannot see it like people do. Search engine spider loves and reads text.

If you are worried about using a special font than using an alternative solution like sIFR or @ font-face .

My recommendation is to always use real text in your navigation, if you use a non-standard font, then use a font replacement, it is supported by all major browsers to achieve your desired look.

see http://www.fontsquirrel.com/ as you use the font on the site. I assume that you have a license so that you can use the squirrel font download and do all the css / etc for you in about 20 seconds.

If you must use an image, make sure the image has an alt attribute and the link has a title attribute.

 eg <a href="home.html" title="home page"><img src="/home/home.gif" alt="home page"/></a>

I think most search engines will use Alt Text instead of the image, so as long as you specify the alt tag, you should be fine.

An alternative is to use plain text, but then indent it away from the screen, and then place a background image over it.

Personally, I would just use the alt tag
