How to convert a .rtf or .doc document to LaTeX?

Unfortunately, I cannot use rtf2latex2e because it says DropUNIX "no longer supports the classic environment." I barely know what I am doing otherwise except that I delete my .rtf file in the DropUNIX program.

What else can I use? I don't mind what type of file I convert to LaTeX (.doc will also be fine if it saves my formatting).

I am using Mac OS 10.5.8.

See the fmtconv question on the British TeX FAQ or, more specifically, the PC Converters page on WordTech processors in LaTeX - an overview that specifically addresses this issue and has many examples. This general list of text filters can also help.

UnRTF claims that it can convert RTF to LaTeX, as well as to other formats (such as HTML). He claims that HTML is best supported, so maybe RTF-> HTML-> LaTeX (e.g. with html2latex) might work better. I actually did not try to do anything.

Make your rtf / doc document into docx and convert it with docx2tex .

You need the System.IO.Packaging.NET class to make it work, which does not present a problem if you use Windows, and in principle it is supported by Mono if you do not. If someone manages to do this with Mono, I would like to hear your impressions: this did not work a year ago, but their implementation of this class has improved since then.

I talk more about the utility in response to tex.stackexchange . Suffice it to say that I consider this to be the cleanest, most convenient option for Latex today.
