Simple torrent system in PHP?

I need to be able to manage some torrent downloads on my server using the old old php, basically I would upload the .torrent file and would like the php script to download torrent files to torrents and zip them. and while he does this, you have a page that could display progress and statistics ... im not even sure where to start!

First of all, check out the answers on the PHP module for reading torrent files

In particular, Eran answers where he refers to http://sourceforge.net/projects/torrentflux/ . I never used it, so I can't vouch for it or anything else, but it looks like you can install it and get what you ask for.

Perhaps you should not reinvent the wheel and use, for example, RTorrent as a backend and write a web interface for it as an interface using php.

What you want sounds awful like the integrated web dashboards of many torrent clients. Some of them provide RPC capabilities over HTTP using XML. Perhaps you can treat the torrent client as a web service and use PHP as an interface for it.
