Writing to specific cells in an Excel spreadsheet without using Excel?

I would like to write to an Excel spreadsheet on a server on which Excel is not installed. Therefore, Excel automation is not possible. I also need to write to specific cells using .NET. Is it possible and how? Can I use an ODBC driver to insert data into specific cells in a worksheet? Without the use of expensive third-party libraries.

I have successfully used the following open source projects:

  • ExcelPackage for OOXML Formats (Office 2007)

  • NPOI for .XLS format (Office 2003)

There is also Koogra:

This library reads an Excel file in native format (BIFF), also works with XSLX format.
