Mountain as a plot for square matrix data

Question

I have data as a square matrix. I want to build it as a meshgrid in Matlab (mountains with color gradients). In addition, if there is a large cliff, I want to designate it. Something like the one shown below

Have you looked at the wireframe () function in the lattice library?

Here is an example from online help:

 library(lattice) wireframe(volcano, shade = TRUE, aspect = c(61/87, 0.4), light.source = c(10,0,10))
