Best JFileChooser alternatives for OS X, Linux?

JFileChooser, at least under OS X, creates a very semi-closed open dialog that doesnโ€™t support things like entering the beginning of a file name to select it or expand triangles.

Does anyone know of a third-party alternative that has more fully functional behavior? Ideally, I would like one for each major platform. I know XFileDialog for windows, but what about Mac and Linux / Unix?

Compared:

Java's file chooser

OS X's file chooser

I found Quaqua Look and Feel which updates JFileChooser a bit - it is still not perfect, but maybe better.

Does java.awt.FileDialog do what you want, you might need to specify

 System.setProperty("apple.awt.fileDialogForDirectories", "true");

if you want to get a directory though
