This Microsoft Connect error report suggests symptoms similar to the ones you describe.
A simple fix would be to disable the "rich visual client experience . " To do this, follow these steps:
- From the Tools menu, select Options.
- Expand the Environment category and select General.
- Uncheck "Automatically adjust visual perception based on client performance."
- Uncheck "Enable rich visual customer experience."
- You can also try disabling "Use hardware graphics acceleration, if available."
- Click OK.

I understand that this is not a very good long-term solution, but it can help make Visual Studio suitable for you. There are still some problems like this that have been occurring since they switched the user interface to WPF. It is very difficult to justify the transition of client applications to WPF if they cannot get it completely right in their flagship development software.
Of course, many things have been greatly improved from beta versions to RTM fonts in the editor window were large , although they are still not quite the same in VS 2010, as in previous versions. It seems that some client configurations may still cause strange errors like this. For what it's worth, I have never personally experienced this on any of the several machines on which I run VS.
