Where can I download the standalone Cygwin installer?

I need a standalone installer with most of the necessary utilities. Somehow, the default installer confuses me with all the package choices. I installed Cygwin, but after installation I can not find the diff utility.

If all you want is UNIX command line tools, I would suggest not installing Cygwin. Cygwin wants to turn your Windows PC into a UNIX workstation, so he likes to install all of its packages.

Take a look at GnuWin32 . These are Windows ports for command line tools and nothing more. Here is the setup for GnuWin32 diff.exe . There are standalone installers for all common tools .

(You asked the installers offline, but in case you ever want it later, a tool that will download and install everything for you .)

Method 2: create a standalone installation zip file for cygwin.

Do not confuse with saving packages, because the installed directory for cygwin can be finished in a zip file and expand whenever you need it on any computer.

  • Download Cygwin Installer

  • select the packages you want to install from gui.

  • click install and wait a very long time to download.

  • open the folder C: \ Cygwin. You now have a standalone zip file for installing cygwin on any machine.

  • Unzip this file on any computer that you like. Set the cmd.exe paths accordingly to point to the cygwin bin directory under the Windows Control Panel.

Here are instructions suggesting that you want to install Cygwin on a computer without an internet connection. I assume that you have access to another computer with an Internet connection. Start with a connected computer:

  • Get Cygwin installer ("setup.exe"). Direct download URL: x86 or x86_64 .

  • When in the settings the prompt “Choose a download source” appears, select Download without installation

  • Go through the rest of the setup (select the download directory, mirrors, required software packages, etc.)

  • You now have the Cygwin repository right on your hard drive. Copy this directory with the setup.exe program to your target computer (it does not have to be on the network).

  • On the target computer, run "setup.exe"

  • When the request “Choose a download source” appears in the settings, select Install from local directory

  • Complete the setup as usual. No internet access.

  • Choose the mirror server closest to you from http://cygwin.com/mirrors.html

Choose any FTP or HTTP mirror.

  • Download a full mirror that supports the exact structure of the cygwin directory file tree in the mirror.

Edit: How to download the entire mirror?

     wget -m <ftp-mirror-url>
  • Run setup.exe and select the source as a local directory and change to the release directory.

You now have a standalone Cygwin installer .

Update: Use Babun. It is based on cygwin and is more user friendly. Get Babun

This is not a direct answer to your question, but you can get the most commonly used utilities from http://www.mingw.org/ without jumping over hoops with this terrible Cygwin installer.

Here is a slightly more informative link http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/cobcurses/index.php?title=Install-MSYS .

There is another solution for creating a standalone Cygwin installer that uses 'pmcyg' ( http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/pmcyg ). If you give pmcyg a list of Cygwin packages that you would like to have, it will automatically download all of them, their dependencies, and setup.exe in a folder that you can write to cdrom.

I am not a big fan of Cygwin. Well, if you have Unix code that requires full POSIX , I suppose. Even then, using this, you get your GPL programs (due to the GPLed DLL) unless you pay Red Hat for a different license.

Most people should use MinGW (and MSYS) instead. This gives you a Unix shell and utilities (even compilers if you want them) without a specially infected DLL. Most users who use the GNU compilers on Windows use MinGW (although some do not understand this).

As this is important for your purposes, you can download the parts separately, rather than using the reload installer.

The SourceForge page is here . I suggest starting with the MSYS base system package, which will provide you with coreutils , bash , make , tar , etc. If you need other things, you can choose and choose from the list of packages.
