Iphone background image size

The normal background image is 320x480 pixels. and for the retina, 640 × 960 pixels.

Now I need to put a background image, and I have a status bar (20) and a navigation bar (44).

So, do I need to reduce 64 (20 + 44) from 480 (normal) or from 960 (retina)?

  • If I reduce 64 from normal, then the normal image will be 320x416 pixels, and the retina will be 640x832 pixels.
  • If I remove 64 from the retina, then the normal one will be 320x448, and the retina will be 640x896.

It bothers me. This 64 (20 + 44) I am reducing from which type of image, because the other will be exactly twice or twice as large.

Reduce the normal size.

64px = height to remove from a regular display.

128px = height for retinal removal.

Do not forget that on the retina screen the status bar and navigation bar will also be equal to 2x height :)

You do everything based on the size of 320x480, then the retina scales everything. Using images with the suffix @ 2x will allow you to replace assets (mainly UIImage) for the retina version; this does not work for links to direct resource files or video / audio files, although just be careful.

So, measure 320 for all your assets, then your retinas will be just twice as large
