Visual Studio 2010 creates a folder in the current working directory at startup

Each time I start Visual Studio 2010, it creates a directory called "Visual Studio 2010" in the current working directory at the time I started it. He just started doing this at the same time that he forgot all the settings on my toolbar, etc.

I obviously have an incorrect setting somewhere, but I can not find it.

This is the final answer that worked for me.

It turns out that Visual Studio 2010 regularly and automatically exports your settings file. (You probably expected it to save your settings on exit, but it will not export them unless you explicitly ask for it.) I think this is done every time you leave, but it seems to create a directory to which it will be exported as soon as it starts. This is the problem that I have seen.

Here's how I solved it:

Tools > Options > Environment > Import and Export Options

Field Automatically save my settings in this file: it was just Visual Studio 2010\Current Settings.vssettings . This is a relative path, so the Visual Studio 2010 folder was created in the current working directory. I changed it to the absolute path M:\Visual Studio 2010\Current Settings.vssettings , and this solved the problem.

Last step; In the registry editor, press Ctrl + F

Find the line "Documents \ Visual Studio 2010 \". And change them too if anything appears ...

And if you still have a problem; open VS2010, go to "tools"> click "extension manager"> try disabling all the plugins (I mean all of them). And again play with VS, create a new project, etc. If a new folder (called "Visual Studio 2010") is created in the "documents", then we are sure that this comes from ide: visual studio 2010 (do not add -ones). Is it possible that you have a macro in EnvirommentEvents that calls this? Go to Tools → Macros → IDE Macros. Look in each of the macro trees in Project Explorer for EnvironmentEvents to find out if any of these macros are guilty.

None of the solutions worked here. I don’t think we still saw the golden bullet.

I wrote to the same settings folder for many years, and suddenly it was useless for a visual studio. The folder was a network folder. Once, every time I ran the solution, it would start creating another Visual Studio 2010 folder in the same directory as the .sln file.

I tried (and tried again), indicating where the settings are saved. I also went through and made some changes to the registry. In the end, it would seem that this was fixed to re-configure the IDE to use the local path, and then reconfigure it again to use the network path. I did this for all the paths that you can set in Tools ... Options ... Environment ... Import and Export Options, as well as Tools ... Options ... Environment ... Projects and Solutions .. . Are common. And now I'm back to the setup I have used over the past few years. He stopped creating new folders every time I open the solution. For now, anyway.

Brute Force Solution:

• Run regedit and rename the [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio] folder to something like " VisualStudio_BAK ".
• Run devenc.exe /resetsettings to reset all the default settings.
