What is the difference between the start / end margin of Android and the right / left?

What is the difference between the start and right margins of Android (or margin and left)?

This is a trivial question, but I seem to be unable to extract from the documentation what the difference is between the start / end of the view and the left / right. Maybe I just don’t understand anything, but I can’t do anything about it.

For a flow from left to right, start = left, end = right.

For a flow from right to left, start = right, end = left.

Start and end concepts were added in API 17 as part of Android 4.2 support for RTL layouts .
