Red status bar showing when the application is not recording and in the background

I am having a problem with the status bar of an application that is recording sound. I have

<key>UIBackgroundModes</key> <array> <string>audio</string> </array>

in my plist to get a notification about the red status bar when recording sound, and the application is in the background. However, if I stop recording and switch to the background, the status bar is still there. I saw this on an iPad 2 running 4.3.2 and iPhone4 with 5.0. I suspect this is an OS4 problem since I am ending the recording correctly and there seems to be no (certified) API to control the status bar.

Has anyone seen this / knows how to fix it? I'm suspicious that this might be an iOS bug, but you need to change the rule first :)

The only thing I've seen on the Internet so far is the (unauthorized) email flow:

I am doing quite a bit of work with audio in the background and have not seen this. I saw this “take time” to go away like seconds, but not get stuck with red.

The PLIST entry I'm using is different.
