What Smalltalk implementation do you recommend for beginners?

I am going to get to know Smalltalk and look for a good implementation for beginners.

I am working on a Windows platform; Main criteria: good textbooks and documentation, active community.

Try Squeak Smalltalk , a very modern, innovative Smalltalk implementation. Or even the more modern, Pharo , Squeak fork, which removes optional code and serves as a reference implementation of Seaside , the framework of a Smalltalk web application.

I am a fan of VisualWorks myself . I think this is a little less bizarre than Squeak / Pharo.
