By default, Emacs is set to Mw
(Alt + w) for copy and Cy
(Ctrl + y) for paste. If you want to use standard shortcuts, go to the "Options" menu at the top of the window and activate the "Cx / Cc / Cv Cut and Paste (CUA)" option.
By default, this is not active. You start the selection by pressing C+<space>
and then moving the pointer (you can actually โset your signโ in this way and then do an incremental search with Cs
to the place you want to select to). You can activate Options> Active Region Highlighting to make the area more obvious. If you are in a window environment, you can use your mouse to make a choice.
I'm not quite sure what you mean by that. As far as I know, backspace should work fine in Emacs (although I used it for a while, I might just forget what โnormalโ means here).
Also, as a former Windows user / current Emacs user, continue. Learning Emacs is really worth it if you can put up with a foreign user interface (you might eventually want to delve into a bit of Lisp).
