Can I change the "from" field in a mailto link?

I am trying to get the mailto link, which will open a new Outlook email window with the field changed (i.e. use a secondary account). Is it possible?

Not. Of course, not with most popular email clients.

I assume that you want to do this in order to save time on your email client. Of course, I would be annoyed by a website that was trying to change my address or reply to an address, so I expected my email client to ignore it.

MAILTO is designed to help the sender contact the address provided on the website. Thus, there are very few things that the sender should have dictated by the website. Even standard options can be quite annoying if they are poorly handled by the website owner.

Your options are pretty much limited.

  • Headline
  • Body
  • cc
  • Bcc

Even if the client had to support From (and I don’t know what it is), there is no obvious way to handle script event handlers with a brief case, such as an address that was not configured in the mail client.

Why do you need this? Perhaps you can use a script to send emails and dynamically set the From header. For example, PHP has a mail () function that allows you to set a custom From address (and change other headers).
