Hide address bar on iPad

I know that you can hide the address bar on iPhone / iPad / Android using window.scrollTo . However, it seems nothing comes out of the address bar on the iPad. The only workaround I found was to add a meta tag and then let the user add the page to the home screen.

Am I missing something? Can you hide the address bar on iPad safari using some other tricks?

This seems to be possible only with a workaround:

 <meta name="apple-mobile-web-app-capable" content="yes" />
