Cancel or Cancel button: when do I use "Cancel" when "Cancel"?

We need to translate part of our user interface into English, and the question arises: when do I use "Abort" when "Cancel" as the button text? They seem pretty interchangeable and translate more or less the same word in German (our source) ... So, is there any difference? If so, then what is it?

In my previous project, we used the following:

  • When a process is already running, use Abort .
  • If at this step the user can refuse to use (not yet started) the use of Cancel .

We also use Abort when a problem is detected.
