Multiple instances of w3wp.exe

I don’t understand why there are two ASP.NET w3wp processes in the task manager, when I have only one website and one application pool. Why are two processes happening? I have googled this and looked at MSDN but cannot find the answer.

I am trying to debug a memory leak in an application. I understand the concept of threads and several threads living in a process, but I don't understand why there are several processes.

I specifically ask which scenarios can lead to the launch of several processes.

Take a look at the Advanced Application Pool Settings for this section and make sure that the specified value is set to 1:
