Is there an available service that responds with the latest available version of Java?

I am writing a system check for an application that uses applets. As part of the verification, I want to inform users if a new version of Java is available for download. Is there an online service that just answers with the version number for the latest version of Java?

The JRE is configured by default to automatically upgrade to the latest version. Oracle believes that it is stable enough for general use. It is better to leave it for the automatic update function.
