What does B mean in BIO?

OpenSSL uses an I / O abstraction called BIO , but nowhere in the documentation that I can find, it doesn't say what B stands for (IO, obviously, I / O). Various websites suggest that B stands for basic or buffered, but these are things like blog posts and forum posts without any degree of authority.

Does anyone have an official quote from the documentation, source code, or OpenSSL developer on what exactly does it mean?
