NetBeans, a theme with a black background

NetBeans has many themes with a black (or dark) background. But how can I make a black backgroung in the project navigation bar

This cannot be done using the netbeans theme. You use windows, so you can change the Windows theme (for Linux it will be the GTK theme) to achieve this. But this will reflect the other applications that you use.

This is possible by installing the Netbeans plugin. I am using ez-on-da-ice (gray background, on linux Mint 13, have not tested it on Windows) with the Monokai theme.

However, stay tuned: Netbeans 7.3.1 will include a couple of dark themes by default !. If you can't wait, just download 7.3 nightly builds right now ...

EDIT: just grab the latest stable version and enjoy.

Besnik is right that NetBeans will not do this for you, but your graphics driver or window manager (Linux) may allow you to invert the entire screen. I do this because the black earth is much lighter before my eyes.

On Windows, I use the amazing NegativeScreen utility Melvin Liley.
