Customize tab size in Visual Studio 2010

I am looking to set the minimum tab size to below 20 by default, since I am editing more than 5 files at a time. I also use the Power Tools extension.

You can right-click on the space next to the tabs, click Customize...

and then Advanced Options , then edit the value from there, but it will not let you go beyond the minimum size of 20.

Is there a configuration file that I can edit to solve this problem, or is there an obvious solution that I am missing?

The solution was actually the maximum size, not the minimum size. So just setting the maximum size was what I wanted. Not perfect, but still the answer.

It is worth noting that in the screenshot that you posted, non-standard VS settings are displayed - this is the extension that you installed. You may find that they hide their settings file separately from the standard VS.

One of the alternative solutions is provided by this extension: it will allow you to have a vertical row of tabs located to the side of the screen. This is more screen space, but suitable for a lot more tabs!

According to MSDN: -

Your active settings consist of two parts: the predefined settings from the installed .vssettings file you selected the first time you started Visual Studio and any subsequent IDE settings that you have made. Active settings are saved by default in the currentsettings.vssettings file.

Therefore its better to edit the values in
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Settings\CurrentSettings.vssettings (this is mine, you need to install it of your choice.)

However, there is another file, you can edit ie C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE\Profiles\General.vssettings , but keep in mind that editing this can be pretty damaging and it’s better to make a backup. You can also ask this at social.msdn.com for more information.
