Is there an absolute limit on how much data you can put in the mailto: body parameter?

Given that I am creating a mailto: hyperlink. Is there an absolute limit on how much data you can put in the mailto: body parameter?

Is this browser dependent?

I believe this is a limitation for mailto URIs. And I believe the restriction is browser dependent.

Check out this question and answers: Bypassing the mailto / href / url character limit

As they suggest in this answer, I would suggest doing some processing on the data server side, most likely in POST over GET.

This link was also provided from this question ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q208427 ) and reports that IE has a limit of 2083 characters in the URL.

I think in the URI defined in some specification somewhere

must be no more than 8000 characters.

More than you will ever need :)
